Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Modern dentistry is about finding solutions that allow you to keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime.
Dr. Byron L. Carr is an experienced dentist who has spent over 30 years providing high-quality patient care, including tooth extractions. When you come to our Hemet or Temecula dental office with a problematic tooth, we will do everything we can to save it; however, sometimes removing it is the safest and healthiest course of action.
We know that patients have lots of questions about tooth extraction, particularly the removal of wisdom teeth.
When Do You Recommend Tooth Extraction?
There are several cases where Dr. Carr might recommend tooth extraction as the best choice to protect your overall oral health, including:
- Gum disease has loosened a tooth, and it must be removed.
- Advanced tooth decay or damage has irretrievably damaged the tooth.
- A dental abscess or infection is too advanced to treat with a root canal.
- A wisdom tooth is impacted or stuck in the gum or is threatening neighboring teeth.
Dr. Carr may also recommend removing a tooth in preparation for orthodontic treatment, dental implant placement, or dentures.
When Is It a Good Idea to Remove Wisdom Teeth?
The last teeth to appear in your mouth are wisdom teeth or third molars that typically arrive in our late teens or early twenties. Because they come in so late in life and are located furthest back in your mouth, they are known for causing problems.
Wisdom teeth are difficult to brush and floss, which puts you at risk for gum disease and cavities. Often, there isn't enough room for wisdom teeth to erupt correctly. Because they crowd existing teeth, wisdom teeth can come in at odd angles, and in some cases, they don’t have any room to emerge, so they become impacted or stuck in the gums.
Dr. Carr’s extensive experience and advanced training enable him to perform comfortable, efficient wisdom tooth extractions, including impacted teeth.
Will My Tooth Extraction Hurt?
It’s common to be nervous about a procedure like a tooth extraction, so we're pleased to offer local anesthetics and sedation dentistry that we tailor for your individual needs.
We use the most potent local anesthetics to numb your mouth, so you don't feel any pain. Dr. Carr is also a licensed sedation dentist who offers nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation to his patients in Hemet and Temecula. Before your procedure, he will explain the benefits of each and recommend the one that best suits your needs.
Would you prefer to go to sleep for your tooth extraction? We are also pleased to offer the services of a trained anesthesia specialist who administers general anesthesia right here at our comfortable dental office.
